Event photography brings its own special pressures, in terms of the requirement to capture a range of scenarios expertly, in the moment, and within the constraints of tight deadlines. Although this process is always pressurized, it helps when you have shot similar events before, particularly as a team. Dave and I recently had the privilege of covering the phenomenal Africa Health Exhibition and Congress in still images and video for the second time.
We had assistance in the process, including some from gorgeous Esther, pictured below with Dave, during a rare moment of respite, waiting for a VIP tour to start. The high intensity schedule was expertly implemented by the team from Informa Life Sciences Exhibitions who do an outstanding job of hosting this world-class event. This year it was held from 28 – 31 May at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, which offers a superb venue for the 450 international exhibition stands and 14 CPD accredited conferences.
To achieve the desired results, we used a few different cameras and lenses, shooting with and without flash in various situations, sometimes required by the ambient lighting and to achieve different results. Some scenarios required perching on step ladders, which are particularly useful for event photography and videography. For more insight and a brief video of the first day’s highlights, take a look at our article Event Videography – Africa Health.
Our detailed brief provided a clear framework and specific times to shoot mass arrivals and registrations, conferences in progress, busy exhibition stands and halls, a variety of training sessions, as well as highlights such as VIP tours, cash prize draws, a drumming and dancing display and cocktail function. In between, we conducted a host of video interviews with key exhibitors and speakers, as well as some delegates and visitors, capturing still images too.
It was also important to shoot a variety of event signage, which directed the throngs of attendees among the different venues. Ad-hoc scenarios came into play as well, such as capturing additional high profile appearances. To summarize, Africa Health provides an exceptional opportunity for exhibitors to gain exposure to thousands of people in the medical profession, and for them to gain insight into the latest technology and advances in the medical field.
